Annie Leibovitz: Wonderland

About

Most fashion photography disappears into the archive the moment the season ends. Annie Leibovitz: Wonderland, published by Phaidon, is a photography book that resists that fate because Leibovitz was never really making fashion images. She was making portraits that happened to involve clothes, and the distinction is visible on almost every page of the 350 photographs gathered here, many of them previously unpublished.

The range across 448 pages is genuinely disorienting in the best way. Nicole Kidman, Cate Blanchett, Rihanna, Lady Gaga, Kate Moss, Karl Lagerfeld: figures who have been photographed thousands of times, rendered here in ways that feel less like assignments and more like negotiations. The mix of color and black and white throughout is not arbitrary. Leibovitz uses the shift in register to separate moods, slowing certain images down to something closer to portraiture and letting others carry the full saturated weight of fashion production.

Anna Wintour's foreword sets the context efficiently: five decades of encounters between Leibovitz and the fashion world, a collaboration that was always slightly uneasy on both sides, which is probably why the work holds up. The previously unpublished material changes the book from a retrospective into something with genuine new information, the difference between a best-of and an archive.

This is for people who follow photography seriously, not fashion specifically. The Phaidon hardcover format handles the images with the kind of physical weight the work earns, and the book sits in a room with the quiet confidence of something that doesn't need to explain itself.
