The Casio W218H takes the shape of Casio’s classic everyday digitals and makes it a little bigger, a little tougher and a lot darker. This all black version is the one to get. The case, strap and display all lean into a stealthy monochrome look, and the 43.2mm resin case is light enough that you forget you’re wearing it.
Press the light button and the LED backlight throws a warm orange glow across the screen. It’s a small touch, but it makes checking the time at night genuinely nice. Behind that minimal face you get a 1/100 second stopwatch with split timing, a countdown timer, a daily alarm and an hourly time signal. There’s also an auto calendar that already knows February has 28 days.
It’s water resistant to 50 metres, so rain, handwashing and the odd splash are no problem. The CR2016 battery is rated for around seven years, and the 20mm resin strap has plenty of adjustment holes for a proper fit. This is the kind of black digital watch you buy once and wear every day without thinking about it, and that’s exactly why it works.
