A desk at midnight runs on ambient light and muscle memory, and the keyboard at the center of it either disappears into the work or gets in the way of it. Electronic Materials Office designed the Altar II mechanical keyboard around the first outcome, building a 75% layout into a CNC-machined 6061 aluminium unibody that sits just 4.75mm off the surface, thin enough that it reads more as desk material than device.
What makes that thinness unusual is what it contains. The Altar II uses custom dual-steel-arm scissor switches with 1.8mm of key travel and a 40gf actuation force, which is light enough to sustain long writing sessions without fatigue. A Harmonic Synthesiser haptic feedback system with a built-in speaker gives each keystroke a physical and acoustic response that feels calibrated rather than decorative. The M-Dial, a small media and volume control, attaches magnetically to the chassis and pulls free without tools, in two profile variants depending on the setup. These are not features added to a list; they are choices that change how the keyboard feels to use over hours.
The NiteLite backlighting uses long-wavelength red LED, which is easier on the eyes during low-light work than the blue-shifted whites common elsewhere. The keycaps are made from REGEN polymer, a material composed of more than 50 percent recycled content, a detail that sits quietly in the product without being announced. Battery life extends to 30 days, which means the keyboard stops asking for attention between charges.
This is a product for macOS users who have thought carefully about what sits between their hands and their work, and decided that the answer should be as unobtrusive as possible.
