Magic Keyboard for iPad

Apple’s first detachable keyboard case appeared with the iPad Pro in 2015; the current Magic Keyboard rethinks that accessory as a freestanding hinge. Anodised aluminium shells front and back sandwich a scissor-switch key bed that offers 1 mm of travel with a quiet, crisp return.

The deck includes a twelve-key function row but remains free of visible fasteners, screws, or seams. A glass trackpad occupies the lower third, haptic-enabled so clicks register uniformly across the surface without a mechanical hinge. The floating cantilever lets the iPad hover above the keys, supported by twin torque hinges that hold position yet fold to a slim folio. USB-C pass-through lives in the spine, leaving the tablet’s own port accessible and maintaining a clean silhouette on either flank.

Soft vegan leather lines the contact points, while the external finish matches the iPad’s bead-blasted texture so the two read as one unit when closed. It is a study in reducing a laptop form to its essential planes while preserving the tactile satisfaction of a well-made keyboard.
